Für Elise, aka Bagatelle No. 25 in A minor, was written by Beethoven.  However, it was not published until 1867, forty years after the composer's death in 1827. The original autographed manuscript, had the title: "Für Elise", dated April 27, 1810.  There are three theories as to who Elise was.  One points to Therese Malfatti, (1792–1851), a friend and student of Beethoven's to whom he supposedly proposed in 1810, though she turned him down to marry an Austrian nobleman.  The other theory points to Elisabeth Röckel, (1793–1883), a 17 year old German soprano singer, who was nicknamed "Elise", by a parish priest (later she called herself "Betty"), who had been a friend of Beethoven's since 1808.  Lastly, there is Elise Barensfeld (1796 –1820), a child prodigy who travelled on concert tours with Beethoven's friend Johann Nepomuk Mälzel.  We will never know for sure.
